Entering college I was well aware of the direction I was headed in, but the nerves of feeling lost remained. As a freshman, I dived right in to the Communication field (thank you high school-credit classes), and was completely taken aback.
Here I was, shy and unable to keep a conversation, giving speeches and presentations almost on a weekly basis. Television production courses had me in front of the camera in under a few months and my head was unable to process everything. Television work was always something I was interested in, which is why I chose it as an emphasis, but I was beginning to second guess myself. Was I really going to be able to do this? Am I in over my head?
Although I felt like I was about to drop it all, I kept going. My peers, the professors and my adviser all kept me leveled, and I began to embrace my dream. I started to come out of my shell and interact with everyone on a more personal basis. I had never been so open before, and it was starting to feel more and more like home.
After a few semesters, I started volunteer work at the KENW broadcast station. I was able to get my hands dirty, and learn about numerous aspects that have always interested me. I took everything in, and tried my hand at every possible task I could. At this point I was still uneasy in front of the camera, so I educated myself on all of the production roles.
A few semesters later, I decided to finally try out for an on-air position without hesitation. I was comfortable, which if you knew me in high school, you'd be surprised. I have always been a crazy, outgoing loudmouth, but I was always afraid to show that side of myself. Coming to Eastern and having the opportunity to work so closely with others and learn skills in an up close and personal matter only strengthened my growth as an individual.
Had I gone to any other school, the work that I was able to do here would have been difficult to find. Eastern is a much smaller university, which gives it a sense of comfort that you wouldn't feel anywhere else. Every department I've had the privilege of interacting with through extra credit courses have been amazing, and just as welcoming as the COMM department was my first year.
Now looking ahead, I've graduated and things are about to change. I don't know where I will end up, but that's the exciting thing about life. I'm an open book, and I hope to express that to the world one day and have them love me as much as I love myself.
So to everyone at Eastern New Mexico University, to all my friends and family, to my peeps at News 3 New Mexico I shall be presenting my last broadcast, and hope to see you all in the near future.
Adrian out…
