Teaching high school science, especially biology, opens up a world of intrigue and wonder, paired with critical thinking and math skills. If you want to unlock these wonders, the biology with secondary licensure degree will prepare you for your career working with high school students. Though time to complete this degree varies by individual, this degree is usually completed in 10 to 12 semesters.
Special Services and Opportunities
We usually have volunteer opportunities in our laboratories or research projects. We also provide volunteer/work-study opportunities for you to work in the live animal exhibit, Dr. Antonio "Tony" Gennaro Natural History Museum and greenhouse. We even have periodic opportunities for paid research experience in faculty labs.
Service and Mutual Interest Organizations
We sponsor three specific campus organizations for students in the Department of Biology. These groups not only give you a place to use your biology skills, but also a way to get involved on campus. The Caduceus Health Society is a campus organization for any health science major, Pre-Dental Society is a campus organization specifically geared toward students interested in dentistry and the Fish and Wildlife Club is a great outlet for students interested in working with animals.
Scholarships and Financial Assistance
Like all Eastern students, if you major in biology, you can take advantage of grants, loans and scholarships offered by Financial Aid and Enrollment Services. There are also opportunities for you to apply for work-study or student hire positions to conduct laboratory research when available.
Career Opportunities
A biology major with an emphasis in secondary licensure prepares you to be a high school biology teacher in public or private institutions.
High School Courses
If you are interested in secondary education should include as many mathematics, science, and English courses as possible in your high school curriculum.
