Bugging Bad: Sajan KC’s Continued Work on Entomological Research

Sajan KC graduated from Eastern New Mexico University in 2023 with a master's in biology, and he is currently attending school at the University of Florida, in the Department of Entomology. Sajan has studied about 1,000 specimens of beetles, which had 59 total species and 29 of those were new to science. He has also worked with butterflies during the course of his previous studies. Since he has done most of his taxonomic work and research in New Mexico, he has recently named a few of his new beetle species after the famous Netflix show Breaking Bad.

Sajan's interest in discovering beetles is rooted in his experiences back home in Nepal. Observing the roles of these insects and how they all played a crucial role in their natural environment caught Sajan's attention. These roles include nutrient recycling, predation, and pollination. To aid his discoveries of new distinct species he catalogs the shapes, colors, behaviors, and distinct male genitalia that set species apart from one another.

Sajan's work often involves going to the fields where these beetles are located and collecting specimens for further research. After collection, he organizes the insects based on data from the characteristics he observes. Continuing with his prior research, he identified 35 potential species. When Sajan identifies these species and documents their characteristics, he uses methods like dissecting specimens to study their genitalia, a key feature for distinguishing related species.

The research component of the ecological characteristics of these beetles is crucial, as thorough description and documentation enable researchers to deepen their understanding and refine their insights. "I hope this research lays groundwork for future studies, and related groups of species." Sajan said. He follows up with his research frequently by monitoring new species discoveries. Sajan is currently working on describing the larval stage of the new species he has identified previously.

Sajan has named two of the beetle species after the famous show Breaking Bad centered in New Mexico. The ‘Hemipeplus heisenbergi’ beetle is a reference to the show’s main character Walter Whites alias, Heisenberg. The Malaysian ‘Hemipeplus saymyname’ beetle is also named in honor of the series, mirroring one of Walter Whites famous quotes. The beetle waited almost thirty years to be formally named. This specific species of beetle is not located in NM because they thrive in hot, humid, and tropical environments.

Dr. Darren Pollock, professor of entomology, has played a crucial role in furthering Sajan’s research. "He helped me get the specimens used in the study, and helped arrange the necessary equipment as well." Sajan said. Additionally, Pollock guided Sajan through the process of understanding the rules of the International Commission of Zoological Nomenclature, which are critical for describing specimens in his newest research. Pollock still continues to guide Sajan, especially in pursuing his Ph.D. at the University of Florida.

Eastern has taught Sajan many valuable lessons. He has shifted his adventuring and hobbies to support his goal of being a professional entomologist. "[ENMU] fosters a welcoming and supportive scientific community," Sajan said. Without the support and guidance, Sajan feels he would not be where he is today.
