If you want to go to medical school, or another professional health-related school (e.g. veterinarians, dentists, physical or occupational therapists, physicians assistants, etc.), after finishing your undergraduate studies, you should major in biology with an emphasis in pre-medicine. Our curriculum provides the foundational coursework that medical and other health-related professional schools are looking for in their prospective students. If you are well-prepared, you can graduate with this degree in 4-5 years.
Special Services and Opportunities
We usually have volunteer opportunities in our laboratories or research projects. We even have periodic opportunities for paid research experience in faculty labs. We also provide volunteer and work-study opportunities for you in the live animal exhibit, in the Dr. Antonio "Tony" Genarro Natural History Museum and greenhouse. We also have periodic opportunities for paid research experience in the faculty labs.
Service and Mutual Interest Organizations
You'll have the opportunity to join Sigma Xi: the Scientific Research Society, where you may apply for funding for research projects. Additionally, you can join the Caduceus Society (specifically for students with medical or medically-related career interests) or the Pre-Dental Society. Students who excel academically are initiated into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, which is one of the largest honor societies in the world.
Scholarship and Financial Assistance
ENMU is committed to helping you finance your education. In addition to grants, loans and scholarships offered University-wide through the Office of Financial Aid and Enrollment Services, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences offers scholarships to returning students, seven of which are specifically for biology majors. Additionally, if you are qualified, you can obtain federal work-study or even work part-time (providing there is a faculty member with funding for such purposes) in the Department of Biology, or elsewhere on campus.
Career Opportunities
Students who major in biology with an emphasis in pre-med usually intend to enter medical or professional school after graduation. However, many also move on to become:
- Technical researchers
- Environmental and clinical workers
- Research assistants
- Biotechnologists
- Biomedical engineers
- Medical technologists
High School Courses
If you are interested in pursuing a degree in biology or wildlife and fisheries science, you should complete as many life science and Physical Science courses as possible and sufficient mathematics courses to be ready for College Algebra (MATH 119). Ideally, you will also be reading and writing at the college-level when you finish high school.
