Eastern New Mexico University offers a great variety of events and options for entertainment on campus. There are also a lot of great off-campus activities in Portales. The key to living in a small town is to explore and find the hidden gems. Here are some suggestions:
On-Campus Activities
- Associated Students Activity Board (ASAB) Events: ASAB has a full rotation of activities to keep students busy. Follow their social media and keep an eye out for comedians, talent shows, performing artists, musicians, community service opportunities and more.
- Visit the Black Water Draw Museum: The Black Water Draw is located in Lea Hall and is full of the history and artifacts from the famous dig site. Their hours are Tuesday-Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. There is a $1 entry fee for students, but it is free for everyone on the fourth Sunday of every month.
- Antonio "Tony" Gennaro Natural History and Miles Mineral Museum: On the first floor of Roosevelt Hall, there is an impressive collection of reptiles, amphibians and fish. There is also a mineral museum where you can explore different types of gems and minerals. There is no admission fee, and they are open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
- Go to Athletic Events: With baseball, softball, basketball, volleyball, track and field, football, rodeo and cross country, Eastern has home games in at least one sport almost weekly. Students get free entrance to every game, so put on some green and silver and go cheer on the Greyhounds.
- Explore the Golden Student Success Center: The new library has places to relax, eat and hang out with friends. They also have a wide variety of books and movies to check out. You can also observe the art gallery on the first floor, as well as the art displayed inside and outside the library.
Off-Campus Activities
- Visit Oasis State Park: Going to Oasis does require driving a few miles out of town, but it is worth the drive to be in the tranquil park. It offers a small pond where you can fish, and various trails to hike. There is a $5 fee for parking.
- Try a New Restaurant: Google places to eat or drive around until you find a new restaurant. You never know, you might even discover your new favorite place.
- Stargaze: In a small town like Portales, the stars can be pretty visible at night. Gather a blanket, hot chocolate and some snacks and set up a stargazing spot in a backyard or a park.
- Play Hide and Seek: Hide and seek doesn't have to be limited to children. Grab a few friends and head to a local park to participate in the classic game. Create new rules or versions to take the game to the next level.
- Volunteer: Spend your time volunteering at the Senior Center or the animal shelter. Not only does this look great on your resume, but it allows you to meet new people and relieve stress by cuddling a few animals.
