Great news: We have a holiday coming up on Sept. 3. It's on a Monday, which is fabulous. Nothing like a long weekend holiday! You get to switch off on Friday and get to have a pleasurable weekend without the dread of a 'Monday.'
So, do you have any plans made for this short break at the beginning of the semester? I would say it's time to dot all the I's and cross all the T's remaining in the to-do-list of the new fall semester.
Best to get your semester planning out of the way before the exciting part of the long weekend:
- Check all the expected deadlines for the assignments and readings.
- Clear the ones you can or prep for those that may be due on Sunday or Monday.
- Set the reminder for those due on Mondays.
It's a short break, but a holiday still. Here are suggestions for some fun stuff you can do this weekend:

- Enjoy hang-outs
- Shop some more!
You can decide to just cruise by yourself or with friends in Portales or be adventurous and do some outdoor activities. Get to know this part of the state!
Take a two-and-a-half hour drive to Ruidoso, New Mexico. There are tons of things to do there, especially this weekend! Enjoy the rich tunes of New Mexico at the Wingfield Park where the All American Country Music Festival which will take place from 11a.m. on August 31 to 10 p.m. on Sept. 1. Next is the Horse-racing at the Ruidoso Downs starting at 12 p.m. on both days.
Friday or Saturday evening can be spent enjoying music/dance with Bo Rivers at the Ruidoso Downs Racetrack/Casino or at the Lost Hiker Brew Tasting. Bo Rivers will entertain from 7-10 p.m. while you dine and dance to the music performance.
You can also enjoy nature and breathe in the pleasant, fresh late-summer air. Take a walk or hike around the trails and lakes. You can even do some fishing and rejuvenate in the nature's peace and quiet.
Let's not forget the cuisine and shopping! After those walks and hikes, you can dine at the various restaurants. You can stroll and walk off the calories along the Shopping streets beside the Wingfield Park. The shopping areas have boutiques, art shops and even some sport equipment.
Important fact: Some of the best arts and crafts are specially designed and hand-made in Ruidoso, so get ready to be thrilled by unique creations.
Not wanting to travel? You can sit right at home and take advantage of some online shopping deals, so make the clicks as fast as you can. It is almost the end of summer, so you may want to change your wardrobe for the new weather.
