Kylie Covill graduated from Eastern New Mexico University in 2022 with a Bachelor of Science in History and a minor in Anthropology. Kylie now works at the Blackwater Draw Museum as the Collections Specialist she said, "The museum field has always interested me". Kylie also worked at the museum while earning her degree and said, "Working there during undergrad made me realize that I want to do this as a career." Kylie enjoyed that Eastern was a smaller school with smaller class sizes, unlike larger universities. Kylie explained, "The biggest draw for me was the small class sizes...I didn't want to be just a number."
Kylie is from Los Lunas, New Mexico and enjoyed that Portales, New Mexico was close enough to home if she wanted to visit, but it was far enough that Kylie could learn how to be independent. While in school, she was the president of the History Guild and made the dean's list every semester for the five years she attended Eastern. Kylie said that her favorite place on campus is the Golden Student Success Center where she, "practically lived there during my last year of undergrad." Kylie's biggest mentor while in school was Dr. Roy Koepp who passed away in September of 2021. Kylie said, "I really enjoyed being able to have good conversations about fun parts of history with him." Kylie was also in band and considers Dustin Seifert, ENMU's band director, as one of her mentors too saying, "He's the bomb.com."
Kylie wants other students who are interested in majoring in history to go for it! Kylie said, "I was very hesitant to get a degree in history, because I didn't know what I could do with it… but there are actually a ton of different job opportunities that you can get with a history degree." Kylie explained that it is a great degree that opens up so many opportunities and teaches you the importance of critical thinking as well as learning how to research properly. Kylie plans to continue her education by getting her Masters of Arts in Museum Studies and become a collections manager or curator at a museum in New England. Kylie said, "Any and all museums are my whole life, so anything to benefit museums is my goal." Kylie hopes to make a meaningful impact in the museum field.
