Whether you prefer writing for a newspaper, hosting your own radio program or reporting for a television newscast, Eastern offers you the chance to get real-life experience doing what you love.
In-Class Experience
Electronic News Production System (ENPS) Software
ENMU (in partnership with KENW) is fortunate to use and teach the Associated Press (AP) Electronic News Production System (ENPS) Software as part of the Communications Broadcast and Production programs. AP ENPS is the world’s leading software solution for professional news production to manage daily broadcasts, streamline operations, and produce high-quality content. ENMU students have the opportunity to learn and use this software throughout their program experiences, gaining critical career experience before completion of the program!
Hound Waves Broadcast
Hound Waves is ENMU’s Student Radio, where students can experience what it takes to create, produce, and host a radio broadcast show. As an added benefit, Hound Waves is Internet-based, meaning no matter if you’re on campus or in other areas of the country or the world, you'll also have a way for your family and friends to tune in to what's going on at Eastern.
KENW
KENW is a public television and radio station that broadcasts from the campus of ENMU. KENW offers students access to professional equipment and first-class facilities for those interested in gaining professional broadcasting experience. You can earn course credit while working for on-air programs such as Sports Look, the nationally syndicated Creative Living, or the student-run weekly news program News 3 New Mexico. Opportunities for hands-on experience include audio and video production, on-air talent, news reporting, graphic design, floor directing, camera operations and more. If you are interested in getting involved with KENW, contact your academic adviser.
Studio C
Studio C presents is an opportunity for broadcast students to practice their craft. Experienced students can create an information or talk show from start to finish. Students can create a studio production, a field production, or an audio podcast that they have creative control over. These projects will be posted on YouTube, linked to the appropriate department pages, and in some cases air live over the Hound Waves internet radio stream.
Student Activities
HoundBytes
HoundBytes is an online magazine that showcases original work created by ENMU students, faculty and staff. Currently, HoundBytes is accepting articles for publication on any topic of interest to the University community. For information, contact Faculty Adviser Mr. Leonard Madrid.
The Chase
The Chase is a student-run newspaper that offers hands-on experience to blossoming journalists, graphic designers and photographers. Each week, The Chase staff designs and produces the full-size broadsheet publication. The Chase fills approximately 30 staff positions each semester, allowing students to publish work they can clip and add to their portfolios for future employers. Working with faculty, peers and the community reinforces responsible journalism and gives students the opportunity to produce a publication of which they may be proud. For information, contact Faculty Adviser Dr. Qian Yu.

Internships
Graduate Assistantships
As a graduate student, graduate assistantships offer valuable experience and financial support. Graduate assistants in the Department of Communication are hired on a yearly or semester-by-semester basis, depending on your qualifications and departmental needs. As a graduate assistant, you are primarily responsible for teaching lower-division undergraduate communication courses; in some cases, you may also work with faculty as a research assistant or assist in other department-related duties as needed. The University waives out-of-state tuition, allowing graduate students to pay tuition and fees at a low in-state rate. If you are interested in applying for a graduate assistantship, you can apply through neogov.
