Environmental Science Program Details
Our Environmental Science Degree Program is a broad-based interdisciplinary major which includes foundation and advanced courses in geology, chemistry and biology. In addition, you have the opportunity to take additional coursework in other areas. Our Environmental Science Degree was designed with input from government and private sector scientists working in various areas of environmental science ranging from mine reclamation to environmental consulting.
The U.S. Department of Labor reports that employment of environmental scientists is projected to grow by 19 percent from 2010 to 2020. Heightened public interest in the hazards facing the environment, as well as the increasing demands placed on the environment by population growth, are expected to spur demand for environmental scientists.
Environmental Science Degree Advising and Hands-On Learning Opportunities
The faculty are committed to responsible academic advising. Faculty members are specialists in their area and are current with requirements for admission into the program. When you major in environmental science at ENMU, you’ll have the opportunity to work with faculty in their research laboratories or on field projects. These projects range from basic field work to lab-based projects involving the use of analytical instrumentation, GIS and other tools.
Service and Mutual Interest Organizations
If you’re nominated, you can become a member of Sigma Xi: the Scientific Research Society, where you’ll have the opportunity to apply for funding for research projects. If you excel academically in the program, you will be initiated into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, which is one of the largest honor societies in the world.
Campus Life Student Organizations
Scholarship and Financial Assistance
We are committed to helping you finance your education. Over 80% of our students receive some sort of financial assistance. The New Mexico Geological Society provides scholarships for an Annual Field Conference, Pipkin Book Scholarship and Pipkin Senior Scholarship. These scholarships are available exclusively for environmental science majors.
Additionally, you have the opportunity to work part-time in the Department of Physical Sciences, or elsewhere on campus.
Career Opportunities
Many students who choose this major usually intend on enter a professional career or attend graduate school after graduation. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, environmental scientists conduct research to identify, abate and eliminate hazards that affect people, wildlife and their environments. They analyze measurements or observations of air, food, water and soil to determine the way to clean and preserve the environment.
Understanding the issues involved in protecting the environment – degradation, conservation, recycling, and replenishment – is central to the work of environmental scientists. They often use this understanding to design and monitor waste disposal sites, preserve water supplies, and reclaim contaminated land and water to comply with Federal environmental regulations. They also write risk assessments, describing the likely affect of construction and other environmental changes; write technical proposals; and give presentations to managers and regulators.
