ENMU Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

 

PORTALES, NM – Sept. 10, 2025– Eastern New Mexico University’s Office of Hispanic Affairs celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month – Sept. 15 through Oct. 15 – with numerous events, speaking engagements, and music programs on campus.

First approved by U.S. President Lyndon Johnson as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968 and expanded by President Ronald Reagan, National Hispanic Heritage Month was enacted into law in 1988 and is a time when citizens are encouraged to recognize the contributions of Hispanic Americans to this nation’s history and culture.

This year’s event schedule includes:

  • Mariachi and Buffet Lunch with Sodexo on Sept. 15 at 11 a.m. at Crossroads Café in the Campus Union (CUB)
  • “Día de la Independencia” presentation by Dr. Maria Duarte on Sept. 16 at 6 p.m. in CUB Sandia room
  • Hispanic Food Truck Rally II on Sept. 25 at 4 p.m. at the south end of the CUB
  • Salsa Magic on Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. in the Greyhound Lounge at the CUB
  • Play “No Sabo” with Hispanic Affairs on Oct 7 at 7 p.m. in the CUB lobby
  • Sombrero Craft Night on Oct 15 at 6 p.m. in the Multicultural Affairs Center, downstairs in the CUB
  • Dia de los Muertos Ofrenda and Face Painting on Oct. 31 at 11 a.m. in the CUB lobby

“As the Office of Hispanic Affairs, we are excited to celebrate with the fun and learning events we have for the community,” said Ross Barbosa, coordinator for the Office of Hispanic Affairs. “From craft nights to Salsa dance lessons, there will be something for everyone to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.”
