Darwin Pauley was a key component in the turnaround of the men's basketball program in the late 1980's. He arrived in Portales for the 1987-88 season and picked up Lone Star Conference Freshman of the Year and First Team All-LSC accolades. After a four-win first season, Pauley became one of the cornerstones and team captains of a team that would win 50 games over the next three seasons. A four-time All-LSC selection, Pauley is still the eighth-leading scorer in team history, and with 1,444 points, just one of 20 players to reach the millennium mark. In addition to his exploits on the hardwood, he was known as a model student and president of ENMU's NAACP chapter in 1990-91. Known as a leader both on and off the court, he was a member of the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps. Pauley also enjoyed serving the community and was a tutor at Portales High School.
