"We are proud to announce Kelley Lee as our head football coach here at Eastern New Mexico University," said Waggoner. "Kelley has been instrumental in the rise of Eastern football success for the past several years. He is an extremely well respected coach by his colleagues, players and the ENMU alumni. Kelley comes from a lineage of football coaches in the state of New Mexico, and is very respected and networked in the New Mexico High School football coaching scene. Additionally, Kelly has the necessary recruiting networks outside of the state that are necessary to enhance our talent pool. He understands ENMU and the 'Greyhound Ingredients' and has been key in academic oversight of the program for several years which has resulted in high achievements academically by the ENMU players. Kelley's offenses have produced some of the best results in the NCAA Division II for the last several years and we are confident the program is in good hands moving forward."
"I'm humbled at the opportunity to lead this program from the front," said Lee. "I'm honored to be able to lead the young men in our program. We have great young men. I'm excited about the future of Greyhound football and I will work tirelessly to continue the upward trend the program has seen over the last few seasons.
Lee's stint as the offensive coordinator has been one of sustained accomplishment. The team set a new mark for points scored in a 10-game season in 2013. The Hounds followed with the three highest scoring seasons in program history. The 2013 team went on to claim Eastern's first Lone Star Conference title since the 1991 season.
A dominant running game and efficient passing game have been Lee's calling card at ENMU. Eastern finished second in the entire NCAA Division II in rushing offense and 11th in passing efficiency in 2016. With the LSC Freshman of the Year (Wyatt Strand) under center, the Hounds were third in the nation in both passing yards per attempt and per completion. ENMU also led the LSC in total offense, first downs, yards per rush, yards per pass attempt, yards per completion, time of possession and fourth down conversion rate.
Lee is very positive about his transition to head coach. "I think our team concept that we've established at Eastern has allowed us to work in the offseason with all position groups. We have a feeling of what we need to do offensively, defensively, and on special teams to achieve our goals."
Prior to Eastern, Lee served as the athletic coordinator and head football coach at Valencia High School. He took over a program that came off a 1-9 season and quickly turned them into a contender, with a 26-9 record and state playoffs in each of his three years. In 2011, Kelley was named the Metro Coach of the Year in 2011 when VHS posted an 11-1 record and led the state is scoring averaging 50.5 points per game.
He also served at the offensive coordinator/assistant head coach at Midland College (Neb.) in 2008 where the offense ranked first in the NAIA in red zone efficiency and in the Top ten in rushing offense and fourth-down conversions.
In 2006 and 2007 Lee was the offensive coordinator/recruiting coordinator at New Mexico Military Institute where his offense finished second in the nation in rushing both years. In 2006 Lee directed an offense at NMMI that finished fourth in the Nation in total offense. In 2002 and 2003 Lee was a graduate assistant for the Greyhounds where he coached running backs and quarterbacks respectively.
Lee earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 2000 from Western New Mexico University where he played quarterback for the Mustangs. He is a graduate of Hot Springs High School in New Mexico. A three-sport athlete while at Hot Springs, Lee played in four state championships in football, basketball and won state track titles in the discus and shot put. Kelley's wife, Melissa, is a former track and field athlete at ENMU. They have two children and Lee's father is in the National High School Football Hall of Fame and New Mexico Coaches Hall of Honor.
