ENMU Presents New Plays

Five New Short Plays by New Mexican Playwrights

ENMU's Department of Theatre and Digital Filmmaking is proud to present the New Mexico New Play Festival, featuring five new short plays from New Mexican Playwrights.

The New Mexico New Play Festival includes works by ENMU students, ENMU alumni, and professional playwrights from around the state. "The stories told are as diverse as the people of New Mexico," says Leonard Madrid, the festival coordinator and ENMU faculty.  This year's festival will be geared toward retelling New Mexican myths and folklore in a way that is accessible to young audiences.

ENMU´s Theatre and Digital Film Department launched the New Mexico New Works Festival in 2023 to celebrate the unproduced plays of regional playwrights. This meets the department's mission of educating ENMU students in the process of creating new works.  Each play is directed, designed, and stage managed by ENMU students.

The plays include Bonney the Kid by ENMU Student Katelynn Hatch, Return to Enchantment by ENMU alumnus Israel Stacy, Mal Ojo by alumnus Santiago Chacón, and Removing the Veil by Santa Fe playwright Susan Herring. The festival usually features ten short, ten-minute plays in one evening.  This year, the festival will include a one-act play, La Llorona; A Mother's Sin, by ENMU alumna Micaela Vigil.

The New Mexico New Play Festival will have performances Thursday- Saturday, November 19- 21, at 7 p.m., and Sunday, November 22, at 2 pm at the University Theatre Center's Studio Theatre. General Admission is $10 per ticket.  Senior Citizens and Active-Duty Military tickets are $7.  Tickets can be purchased in advance at enmu.edu/theatrelive.

The mission of the Department of Theatre and Digital Filmmaking is to ensure that when students graduate, they will possess the intellectual, creative, and technical skills to self-produce in the modern entertainment industry. Writing, analysis, visual awareness, and history of storytelling and performance are foundations for student success in the dramatic medium.
