Eastern New Mexico University is located in Portales, a friendly community of 11,000 people. The small town setting provides a safe environment for students and families. Portales ranked 15th in quality of life among 577 U.S. micropolitan areas in a 2006 survey by Bizjournals.com.
A majority of students are from within 150 miles of campus, but ENMU welcomes students from 45 states and 20 countries. Nearby Cannon Air Force Base brings in military families from around the world.
Portales lies in the heart of a major agricultural region on the High Plains, just 22 miles from the Texas border. With an elevation of 4,000 feet, the area has a mild daytime climate and low humidity. The average daily temperature is 72 degrees.
Health Services, located in the west end of Curry Hall, provides on campus medical care for ENMU students. The office is open Monday–Friday from 8 a.m.–5 p.m., except for school holidays. Students can walk in from 8 a.m.–9:30 a.m. on weekdays or make an appointment at 575.562.2321 to be treated at other times. Services include immunizations, medications, flu shots, blood tests, prescriptions and women’s health care. Students need to bring a student ID with a current activity sticker to every appointment.
Roosevelt General Hospital is located just one mile from campus, The hospital, built in 2001, is equipped with modern equipment and fully staffed by doctors, nurses and medical technicians. Urgent care is available through Portales Medical Center and La Casa Health Clinic. A number of local doctors maintain private medical practices.
ENMU's Counseling Center provides students with psychological support to help them function more successfully. The Counseling Center offers services for students with short-term transitional issues and referrals for students who may have long-term treatment needs.

ENMU has a full-service ENMU Police Department Department that makes regular patrols and answers campus calls. Officers are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The main number for campus police is 575.562.2392 and the after-hours number is 575.760.2945. Campus officers work with the Portales Police Department and Roosevelt County Sheriff's Office to prevent and investigate crimes.
Each residence has a reception/security/service desk that is staffed 24 hours per day. Each hall has professionally trained resident assistants and restricted outside door access.
Associated Students of ENMU offers a free Safe Ride Service. It is available 24 hours a day, free and confidential. Every ride is provided by both a male and female employee. The student employees pick up the student and will transport them safely home in the Portales vicinity.
The program is not specifically for intoxicated students, but for any student in an unsafe situation who needs a ride home. For more information, call 575.562.2473.

Eastern offers many activities, such as free movie Mondays, talent shows, concerts, plays, Greyhound sports, multicultural events and dance and comedy performances. Most events are free to ENMU students.
Community members make students feel welcome at events such as Dawg Days for incoming freshmen. ENMU hosts events such as the Peanut Valley Festival, celebrating the Valencia peanut, a locally grown crop.
Students can play intramural sports or work out with the equipment in the MaxPac, swim in the indoor natatorium or play racquetball and tennis on campus courts.
Eastern hosts guest artists and a variety of student theatre, dance and musical performances. The Runnels Gallery in Golden Library exhibits works by students, faculty and guest artists.
The area's history dates back 11,000 years to the days when prehistoric Clovis man hunted mammoth with stone-tipped spears at Blackwater Draw, north of Portales. Eastern operates five museums that showcase all aspects of local history:
