The Center for Teaching Excellence promotes planned teaching improvements and innovations by funding worthy staff development projects. The CTE will fund any essential professional activity including consultants for in-service training that is designed to improve classroom quality in New Mexico public schools. These projects may be funded up to $1,000 per year.
Innovations are more likely to be funded and successful if the following elements are present:
- The proposals include a timeline and follow-up plans, such as a second in-service by a presenter or consultant to answer implementation questions or the questions teachers did not know to ask at the start. The CTE may fund a project for up to three years.
- Teachers will need to be supportive of the project. If they plunge into it with enthusiasm, it’s more likely to succeed.
- The in-service should fit with the overall goals of the school regarding intended student outcomes.
- Multiple evaluation tools will give a better measure of success.
Other activities that strengthen implementation of the in-service concept can also be supported. For instance, one or two teachers may visit another school where an innovation is already established. The CTE can pay for substitutes for these teachers.
