Police OfficerLocation: University Police Salary: Commensurate with education and experience Deadline Date: Open until filled with review of applications beginning November 13, 2009 Date Available: As soon as possible Job Summary: Under limited supervision, the police officer will enforce local, state, and federal laws and ensure compliance with University policies and provide security for personnel, real property, and equipment. Typical duties and responsibilities include: patrolling University property to provide security and traffic law enforcement; respond to emergency and non-emergency calls; conducting accident and crime investigations and preparing a detailed report; providing escort services for visitors, students, staff, and faculty; providing public assistance, including lockout services, first aid, and vehicle jump-starts ; providing building security, including locking and unlocking doors; processing evidence, preparing court cases, and providing legal testimony; writing and filing daily activity reports; operating university patrol cars safely; and performing other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications: Education and experience: a high school diploma or equivalent is required for all police officer positions. Appointments to Police Officer II require certification by the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy or another accredited law enforcement academy with the eligibility to obtain New Mexico certification. Knowledge, skills and abilities: ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to understand and follow safety procedures; ability to write reports containing technical information; ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations; skill in the use of first aid procedures; ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures; skill in completing accident and criminal investigations; skill in providing protection services to individuals on campus; ability to complete moderately complex administrative paperwork; ability to gather and organize legal evidence; skill in utilizing building security and lock systems and procedures. Applicants must be of good moral character with conduct consistent with the University and state code of conduct. Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside during daytime, night, and weekend hours. Police officer work requires moderate physical activity and is medium in nature with 50 pounds maximum weight to lift and carry; requires pushing, pulling, climbing and/or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling, reaching, handling, using hands or fingers, talking and/or hearing, and seeing; requires exposure to conditions which are wet and exposure to noise and vibration, fumes, dust, odors and/or toxic situations that may be hazardous.
