Job Summary: As a lead worker, performs a variety of complex technical duties as needed to help expedite various phases of assigned planning projects and processes; conducts technical research and analysis in support of one or more areas of land use, community, economic and social planning or development programs.
Qualifications: Graduation from college with an associate’s degree in geography, planning, statistics, computer graphics and/or related fields and, Two years’ experience in planning research/land use analysis including use of geographic information systems, data base management systems and graphic applications. Software experience includes ARC/INFO dBase-IV, MS-Windows Office Professional, WordPerfect and/or PageMaker.
An equivalent combination of education and experience.
Duties: Collects and analyzes specialized data for planning programs related to community needs, goals and services; compiles data and statistics for planning projects and City-wide projects; assists department staff or non-City personnel engaged in research analysis. Updates research and coordinates printing of information brochures; prepares graphic elements such as maps, charts or other visual aids necessary for planning program presentations; researches, compiles and prepares maps to accurately detail ownership parcels, easements, rights-of-way, zoning, flood plains, highway corridors, etc.; purchases and maintains adequate graphic supplies. Prepares reports for publication and printing; prepares information for typesetting, labels, legends and map information on graphics machine (blueprint machine, lettering machine). Conducts field surveys; prepares blueprints from aerial/base maps; may be required to attend and prepare presentations for special committee meetings, City Council or departmental meetings. Performs statistical analysis including housing starts, population projections and estimates of population, projections of housing trends, and analysis of vacant and developed land to determine rates of absorption by land use categories. Coordinates United States Census; acts as liaison to the Regional Office for census; organizes meetings of Census Statistical Areas committee; maps new census tracts and writes corresponding reports; keeps abreast of data available through department of Census and related agencies; answers public and staff inquiries. Conducts research on computer mapping or other options to update city’s base maps; schedules technical aspects of planning projects.
