Job Summary: This position is located in the Sample Processing Section (of the Common Services Division), Laboratory Resources Unit (LRU) of the USDA's National Center for Animal Health (NCAH), based in Ames, Iowa. The Common Services Division provides services to all entities of the NCAH plus other support units. The NCAH is comprised of three separate entities: Center for Veterinary Biologics (CVB), National Animal Disease Center (NADC), and the National Veterinary Services Laboratory (NVSL).
APHIS is an emergency response agency. This means that all Agency employees may be asked or assigned to participate in rotating temporary duty assignments to support emergency programs at some time during their careers with APHIS.
Qualifications: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-04 level) that may have been obtained in the private or public (local, county, state, Federal) sectors which demonstrates: Experience using problem solving techniques to determine appropriate course of action regarding sample submission. Experience following established guides to complete complex tasks with limited written instructions. Experience using accuracy and attention to detail when performing duties; OR Successful completion of 4 years of course work leading to a bachelor's degree in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for this grade level.
Duties: Performs pre-screening and initial assessment designed to mitigate interruptions in operations as a result of contaminates, explosive, or incendiary devices received.
Inspects all submissions and the accompanying paperwork for agreement and accuracy in identification and labeling. Identifies and corrects inaccuracies.
Identifies type of sample received, determines testing required and sample priority then assigns to proper laboratory section for testing.
Enters and maintains submission information into various databases.
Reports testing results to the appropriate personnel as needed.
Creates and maintains appropriate logs of sample status and sample tracking in accordance with Quality Management standards.
Assists in proper destruction of hazardous biologic vaccine wastes and disposes of packaging and associated containers in accordance with Department of Health and Human Services or APHIS permits.
Assists with import/export testing coordination; notifies laboratory personnel (employees not under his/her immediate supervision) for overtime work on a weekly basis.
