Job Summary: Serving the West with Federal Hydropower. We offer career opportunities in a fast-paced, dynamic electric utility industry. We market federally produced hydropower from more than 50 powerplants across the central and western United States and operate and maintain over 17,000 miles of high-voltage transmission lines. The Western Area Power Administration is one of four power marketing administrations within the Department of Energy .

Specialized experience for this position is defined as:
GS-12: Includes experience conducting interconnected transmission planning and /or operational engineering studies using power flow and dynamic stability programs such as GE, PSLF, PTI, and Power World.
GS-13: Includes experience conducting interconnected transmission planning and/or operational engineering studies using power flow and dynamic stability programs such as GE PSLF, PTI, and Power World. Includes experience in recommending mitigation measures to maintain compliance with NERC Reliability Standards.
Duties: Assists in directing and implementing mandatory NERC/WECC reliability standards and applicable sections of FERC orders that pertain to transmission planning, operation and standards of conduct issues. Provides documentation and support for the NERC reliability standards compliance process. Prepares, coordinates, and reviews power system planning and operations engineering studies to identify future power projects or other mitigation measures required to meet power system performance and reliability criteria. Conducts studies such as power-flow and dynamic stability disturbance analysis and equipment loading and losses to simulate and benchmark the performance of the interconnected transmission system for various system conditions. Makes recommendations based on comprehensive analysis of study results. Prepares and reviews planning and operation reports on power system additions and modifications necessary to ensure the power system remains adequate to meet the NERC/WECC reliability and performance requirements and the SNR needs. Participates and coordinates power system planning and/or operational engineering analysis in local and regional system study groups involving public and private utilities to evaluate the impact on the existing power system caused by future power developments such as new generation and/or transmission facilities.
