Job Summary: Performs paraprofessional engineering work in the design and construction of public works projects, including streets, storm drainage, water distribution and sewer collection lines, public buildings, water and sewer treatment facilities, under the supervision of a design professional.
Completion of two years of college or technical school coursework in general engineering, including courses in surveying, drafting, and design or four years as an inspector, technician or surveyor in the fields of construction, engineering, or maintenance of public work projects.
Possess a valid Texas Driver License.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of computers necessary. Ability to utilize PC based office software. Ability to deal effectively with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public. Thorough knowledge of engineering mathematics, principles, and methods as they apply to the design and construction of public work projects. Ability to speak Spanish is desirable.
Duties: Reviews subdivision plats, site plans and building plans for compliance with the right of way ordinance and other appropriate ordinances, standards and policies. Communicates right of way information and requirements to general public and other City departments and prepares application for all construction within the public right of way and assesses applicable fees for right of way permit and dispatches all Engineering inspections to assigned personnel.
Reviews and recommends measures to assure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, accepted practices, standards and ordinances of all plans, specifications, cut sheets, etc., for all types of public works construction projects.
Coordinates projects with utility companies by furnishing and requesting information that affects the construction of the project.
Prepares and reviews monthly pay estimates for all City funded construction projects.
Investigates and responds to requests for miscellaneous information on utilities, paving, drainage, and City right-of-way for the public and other departments.
Prepares annual construction report for the Department and closes out project, records and prepares as-built plans for construction projects.
Performs engineering computations and design using engineering software on a PC. Maintains database files on a PC and prepares reports from the database.
Performs inspection of public works projects as a back-up for the Construction Inspector.
Performs other duties as assigned.
