Job Summary: In the next few months, the Southern Research Station (SRS), headquartered in Asheville, NC, will be announcing a vacancy for a GS-12/13 level GS-0401 Supervisory Biologist 12/13 or a GS Public Affairs Officer 1035 12/13. The team leader for Outreach and Marketing works directly for the Assistant Director for Science Delivery and has responsibility for the overall communication and marketing and technology transfer function of the station’s science programs. The team leader works with the Science Delivery group, station leadership and scientists and external partners to further the SRS mission to communicate the science and technology needed to sustain and enhance southern forest ecosystems and the benefits they provide.

Qualifications: Requirements include excellent marketing skills; media savvy; excellent writing, editing, and presentation skills; appreciation of science and its contributions to natural resources; excellent interpersonal skills; technology transfer; conservation education; a track record in forming strong working relationships; and strong leadership and supervisory skills.

Duties: Duties of the position include the following:
•Station strategic communication planning and execution
•Developing marketing products for a variety of uses and audiences
•Developing strategic alliances internally and with external partners, especially the southern region and extension forestry
•Working with scientists to best present their research to reach a broad audience
•Providing strategic communications support to the Forest Values, Uses, and Policies science area
•Working closely with the technology transfer personnel to support and complement their efforts
•Outreach to undeserved audiences and partners, including Southern Region Extension Foresters
•Writing articles for Compass magazine and annual report and developing and editing the products section of Compass
•Serving as the chair of the Science Delivery Advisory Council
•Serving as a team member and station representative to the National Science
Application Team.

The incumbent supervises four employees, which are responsible for all SRS communication products and services, including technical publications, nonprint science applications, Web presence, Compass magazine, assistance congressional briefing materials, and direct customer service.
