Thomas Tafoya

Major: School counseling/sociology
Hometown: Portales, N.M.

Students at Portales High School get heartfelt encouragement to go to college from guidance counselor Thomas Tafoya.

Twenty years ago, he walked the same halls as a student. In 2005, he returned after earning his second degree at Eastern, a master’s in school counseling. He also holds a bachelor’s in sociology from ENMU.

“My education here has opened so many doors,” Thomas says. “You can ask anyone else who’s a graduate. They are able to compete for jobs out there. It says something for the quality of education.”

What motivates Thomas is giving back to the school and community, one student at a time.

“A good day at work for me? Knowing that I’m really helping students move toward graduation and a diploma, as well as their future plans. To be a little part of that, help in some way, makes me feel good.”
