Colita Hagar Messer

Major: Communicative disorders
Hometown: Carlsbad, N.M.

Colita Hagar Messer confirmed her calling in a communicative disorders class at ENMU. “I took an introductory course and fell in love with it,” she says.

Interested in both education and medicine, she found a fit in speech-language pathology. “The field is the best of both worlds.”

Eastern’s friendly atmosphere and reputation as an education school attracted the Carlsbad High graduate, who started out as an education major.

Her enthusiasm for her career grew during her internship, when she worked two days per week with a client and spent time observing in ENMU’s clinic on campus.

In fall 2007, Colita began work on her master’s program in communicative disorders at ENMU.

“I love the professors. They’re very helpful. Everyone here at Eastern is helpful, from the administrators to the staff. They make you feel welcome and comfortable.”
