David Hunton

Major: Business administration
Hometown: Albuquerque, N.M.

A career tip from an ENMU professor helped David Hunton claim a career in insurance.

Seeing his interest in insurance classes, Professor Bob Goodrich suggested that David ask a local agency if they needed part-time help. He was hired and took a full-time job after earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1979.

Over the last 20 years, he has purchased three small agencies and combined them. The owner of Hunton Insurance has seven employees in Portales and three in Roswell. The agency writes home and auto policies, but the largest share of its business is commercial coverage for dairies, farms and ranches in eastern New Mexico and West Texas.

A graduate of Eldorado High School in Albuquerque, David chose Eastern because it was a small university. “I liked the fact that you knew everybody on campus and everyone was very friendly.”

Serving as president of the ENMU Alumni Association Board allowed him to share his Eastern pride.

“I work with the Alumni Association because I believe Eastern was and still is a great school. As my dad was, I’m proud to be an alumnus.”
