Meet Sean Slayman: Applications Support Specialist
interview by Wendel Sloan
"I am very much a third-culture kid and don't completely identify with one culture." – Sean Slayman
Editor's Note: Sean Slayman, new Applications Support Specialist in Information Technology Services, began working at ENMU on March 3.
Q. What are the main duties of your job?
The main duties are to understand and create applications using Workflow, Envision Software and Banner.
Q. What have you enjoyed most about your job, and what have been the biggest challenges so far?
As a recent graduate, not from ENMU, I appreciate this job as an opportunity to develop my skills. My biggest challenge has been absorbing all the information I have to learn.
Q. What were you doing before you came to ENMU, and what other jobs have you held?
Before ENMU, I was working my way through college. Most of my jobs have been outside of major. Lifeguarding was the most recent one.
Q. What are your degrees and majors?
I have a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science from Huntington University in Huntington, Indiana.
Q. Where were you born, raised, and what was your life like growing up?
I am a military dependent so I moved around a lot. I was born in Delaware but have also lived in Texas, Japan, and Indiana. I am very much a third-culture kid because of this and so don't completely identify with one culture.
Q. Your own family, pets, etc.?
My dad just retired from the Air Force and is currently looking for a Job in Human Resources. My mom works in the Chapel on the base organizing events and such.
I have three siblings: one sister, two years younger, and two brothers, eight and 16 years younger.
Q. What are your hobbies?
I occupy most of my free time with creating or playing video games and/or music. I can play guitar and piano pretty well but also enjoy singing and playing bass or drums.
Q. What is your ultimate career goal?
My ultimate career goal is to create things for people that make their lives better. It is a bit vague for now, but I'll iron out the details as I get older.
Q. What gives your life meaning? Besides career goals, what else do you hope to accomplish?
I enjoy helping people and want everyone to reach their full potential as a human being.
Q. What is your general impression of Portales, and ENMU?
I have only really lived in New Mexico for about six to seven months accumulative. So far I have really enjoyed the friendliness of the Portales community. It is far from the most exciting place on earth, but the people here seem to know how to make the most of it so I hope to get to know more of them.
Q. Other thoughts?
I am excited to be a part of the ENMU Portales community. I hope I can meet and exceed the expectations of those that I work with while getting to know them as well.
