“It’s nice to have a good class size and getting to work with my students.”
– Beth Birky
Beth Birky has joined Eastern New Mexico University as an instructor in the Department of Health and Physical Education.
One of Ms. Birky’s professors at the University of New Mexico knows the program director, Dr. Drabbs, and sent her an e-mail about the position.
Ms. Birky’s ultimate career goal was to teach at a university, so she applied for the position.
Her position entails teaching students how to teach physical education classes.
“It’s nice to have a good class size and getting to work with my students,” said the home chef.
She received her undergraduate degree in physical education at Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, Va., and her master’s in sports administration at Florida State University. Currently, she is working on a Ph.D. at UNM.
Before coming to ENMU, she was working as a medical secretary in Omaha, Neb. She was living with her brother and family. “This allowed me to get to know my niece and nephew,” she said.
Also, this avid outdoorswoman has an older sister who lives in Ohio and a younger sister who lives in Chicago.
She says, “I can’t wait to see how the winters here in Portales are different from Albuquerque.”
Ms. Birky has lived all over the U.S. and Honduras, and loves to travel.
“I’ve enjoyed the time here so far, and look forward to the rest of the school year,” said Ms. Birky.

New Parade Route for Homecoming
Homecoming festivities are rapidly approaching. In preparation for these events we will have a few road closures and deviations from the norm as a result of road construction.
On Sept. 28, the College of Education School Carnival will be taking place from 3-7 p.m.
The stretch of roadway on campus from the southeast exit/entrance of the JWLA & Theatre Parking Lot to the intersection of South Avenue N and Sesame Street will be blocked off for this event. This is the stretch of roadway that runs in front of the Art & Anthropology Building. Handicapped parking for this event will be located in the small parking lot south of the Education Building.
We will also be having the Homecoming Pep Rally and Bon Fire that night after the Zia Volleyball Game in the east (unpaved) parking lot of Greyhound Arena. Students and patrons of the Volleyball Game and this event will need to park in the northwest (paved) parking lot or the southwest (paved) parking lot of Greyhound Arena.
The east (unpaved) parking lot will be blocked off along with the stretch of roadway on Beech Street that runs from the east exit of the northwest (paved) Greyhound Arena Parking Lot to the intersection of South Avenue M.
Please assist us with these events by assuring any and all vehicles are moved from the above-mentioning areas by Friday, Sept. 28 at 2 a.m. This will also prevent the unnecessary inconvenience of vehicles being removed at the owner's expense.
On Saturday, Sept. 29 the Homecoming Parade will be at 10:30 a.m. Due to road construction, we will have to deviate from the traditional route. The parade will start from the intersection of West 3rd Street and South Avenue C. The parade will go down South Avenue C in front of the Portales Fire Department and curve onto South Avenue D in front of Juanito's to the intersection of West 18th Street. The parade will then go west on West 18th Street to the intersection of South Avenue J where it will end near the Bernalillo Hall Parking Lot. The Greyhound Football Game is to follow at 2 p.m.
We appreciate your patience and cooperation with these circumstances. If you have any questions concerning these or related matters please feel free to contact the ENMU Police Department at (575) 562-2392.
