Software Clearinghouse Has New Titles – The New Mexico Educational Software Clearinghouse is located in room 145 at the back of the Golden Library behind periodicals. It provides the ability for in-service and out-service educators to preview software designed for the K-12 student prior to purchase. Since the Clearinghouse is inside of the Golden Library items are checked out through the library.

Monkeys, Ducks and Frogs is a British numeracy program written by Pauline Eccles and published by Sherston Publishing Group. The learning objectives of the software include: improving basic counting skills, developing listening skills, developing problem solving skills, and practicing fine motor skills.

The installation is easy. All one has to do is open My Computer, double click the drive that the software is in, double click setup, and follow the on screen instructions. The QuickStart pamphlet which is the only manual that came with the software, does not give any installation instructions, which is rare for a Sherston product. The inexperienced computer user should have no trouble installing the software.

The QuickStart pamphlet is very readable, and indeed helpful in using the software. The pamphlet briefly covers what the program is about, what the activities’ focuses and depths are, how to change levels, and details what the teacher’s options are. It does not offer guidance for using the software in the classroom beyond stating its ability to be used well on whiteboards, and the ability of the software to be used through mouse or switch.

This software accomplishes all goals quite well. There are seven activities for each animal theme, which promotes transferability of the skills across different environments. The subject matter may be simple, but the presentation is very nice, and the method of imparting the information is enjoyable. The software is fully interactive, due to the fact that it is all activities. Even the sing-along is interactive, because it asks its user to sing along. This program does not give any real feedback or guidance in regards to student progress, due to the fact that the content is simple. The age group that this program is aiming toward is PreK through Kindergarten. Overall, this program is very well produced, and is a great beginning counting software, including some subtraction and puzzles.

For assistance, contact Tyson Brown at 562.2646 or visit him at Room 146 in Golden Library.
