ENMU Designated 'Military Friendly' School
by Wendel Sloan
Communication Services

Eastern New Mexico University in Portales has been named a “Military Friendly School” by G.I. Jobs magazine.  Criteria for making the “Military Friendly Schools” list included efforts to recruit and retain military and veteran students, results in recruiting military and veteran students and academic accreditations.

Schools on the “Military Friendly Schools” list offer additional benefits to student veterans, such as on-campus veterans programs, credit for service, military spouse programs and more.

Dr. Steven Gamble, ENMU president, said, “We are very pleased with the ‘Military Friendly School’ designation.  With Cannon Air Force Base so close to our campus, ENMU is keenly aware and appreciative of the sacrifices military personnel and their families make in protecting our country.  Eastern wants to do everything in our power to accommodate their educational needs to enhance the achievement of their personal and professional goals.  We also believe that the motivation and maturity of our military students serve as great role models for other students.”

Rich McCormack, publisher of G.I. Jobs, says, “This honor ranks Eastern New Mexico University in the top 15 percent of all colleges, universities and trade schools nationwide (for being military friendly).”

Military students can search for “Military Friendly Schools” at www.militaryfriendlyschools.com based on degree type, geographic location, military tuition discounts, credit for military service, Yellow Ribbon program, academic accreditations and more. They can also request information directly from the school, via an electronic reader response form. The site provides prospective military students with information on undergraduate colleges, graduate schools and trade/vocational-technical schools.

“This website is especially important now because the recently enacted post-9/11 G.I. Bill has given veterans virtually unlimited financial means to go to school,” said Mr. McCormack.

The list was compiled through research during which G.I. Jobs polled more than 7,000 schools nationwide.  Methodology, criteria and weighting for the list were developed with the assistance of an academic advisory committee of educators and administrators from Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Toledo, Duquesne University, Coastline Community College and Lincoln Technical Institute.

A detailed list of “Military Friendly Schools” was highlighted in the annual Guide to Military Friendly Schools and on a poster, both of which were distributed to hundreds of thousands of active and former military personnel.

ENMU Sends Military Care Packages to Middle East
Story and photo by Jessica Eden
ENMU Communication Services

In 2008, Nikki Howard, executive secretary in Academic Affairs at Eastern New Mexico University, was sending a care package to her son in Iraq.  After Renee Neely and Belinda Wall of Academic Services inquired if boxes could be sent for others, a project was born.

care package for military
ENMU student James Golden and employee Nikki Howard help fill care boxes for military members.

The first box was sent on July 3, 2008.  Since then 17 boxes have been sent to Iraq and Afghanistan.  The campaign targets any military members in Iraq or Afghanistan  affiliated with ENMU, including students, alumni or relatives of students or employees.

“We are trying to get the word out that boxes for military are still being shipped.  This is a way to show our appreciation for our service members, and let them know that they haven’t been forgotten,” said Ms. Howard, whose son served in Iraq.

Some of the items sought include: AA and AAA bat teries, toothbrushes, dental floss, razors, toothpaste, shaving cream, foot powder, gum, hard candy used as filler , trail mix, Sudoku books, magazines, books, hacky sacks, stationary (don’t worry about stamps, military get free postage), yoyos, cool collars and brain savers (to stay cool in the scalding temperatures of 122-plus degrees; Howard can explain how to make), etc.
To have a box sent to an ENMU-affiliated military member in Iraq or Afghanistan, contact Howard with the name, unit mailing address and unit commander.  The shipping cost of $11.95 per box is being donated by ENMU administrators.

Donation boxes can be found on campus at Golden Library, the Physical Plant, Human Resources, Academic Affairs and the University Computer Center.

For more information, contact Ms. Howard at 575.562.2312, e-mail nikki.howard@enmu.edu or stop by Room 204 of the Administration Building.

ENMU Adopting Two Rescued Greyhounds
(Name Suggestions Being Accepted)
logo

Eastern New Mexico University is adopting two rescued former racing Greyhound dogs, from the New Mexico Greyhound Connection, as its official animal mascots.

From Oct. 23-Nov. 6 applications will be accepted from ENMU juniors and seniors to be their official handlers.  The six chosen students, who must have 3.0 grade point averages, will receive stipends.  Applications can be picked up in Room 108 of the ENMU Administration Building beginning Friday, Oct. 23.

ENMU is also accepting name suggestions for the male and female dogs from the public from Oct. 23 through Nov. 6, and donation voting will be from Nov. 9-20.  Once a committee accepts the top three to five suggestions for each dog, the winning names will be determined by which receive the most donations for the dogs’ upkeep.

Submit entries to greyhound@enmu.edu or at www.enmu.edu

The ENMU Foundation has donated $1,000 and the ENMU Bench Club has donated $2,000 seed money for the dogs’ adoption and care.

The dogs, who will be cared for by ENMU’s Pre-Vet Club and the Department of Agriculture, will arrive around Dec. 1, with their official debut set for January of 2010.

For more information, call Janice Morrow at 575.562.2133.

Interesting Information About Greyhounds
(taken from 'Author palace' Web site)
Greyhounds can be loving, sweet and intelligent dogs to have as pets. They also fit in well with families that already have other dogs or small children. No other dog breed can beat their speed, either. Greyhounds can easily form attachments to their owners and show extreme loyalty.

Greyhounds date back to the 5th and 6th centuries where they were used for hunting due to their keen eyesight. The word "hound" is actually a derivative of the Old English word "hund" which also meant dog.

Greyhounds can reach speeds of 43 miles per hour. That's why they are used as the mascot for the American bus company! Unfortunately, their quickness means that they are also used for dog racing. This, within itself, wouldn't' be bad, but on occasion the dogs are mistreated and abused once they can no longer race. Luckily, there are many Greyhound rescue companies out there who are trying to help the lovable dogs find good homes once they have retired from the business.

The Greyhound is also used as a mascot for several universities as well, including Loyolla College in Maryland, Eastern New Mexico University, Assumption College and the University of Indianapolis.

New Criminal Justice Prof Returns to Roots
story and photo by Erin Griffith
Communication Services
Michael Ryan

Eastern New Mexico University’s new assistant professor of criminal justice has returned to his roots. After growing up in Lubbock then moving around the country, Dr. Michael Ryan has come back to the area to be closer to his family.

Dr. Ryan teaches introduction to criminal justice, corrections, criminology and a sociology class. Prior to teaching here, Dr. Ryan primarily taught sociology because that was the area of his specialization His dissertation research looked at deviance and how therapists view the line between normal and deviant therapy practice, which actually falls in very well with criminal justice.

So far, Dr. Ryan has enjoyed Eastern. “I’ve already made more friends here than in other places I have worked;  people are open and friendly and helpful,” he said.

Because he was a nontraditional student, one of his strengths as a teacher is that he can bring life experiences to his lectures. Dr.

Ryan says that his students are getting used to him and his teaching style.

“My tests are very hard and my students didn’t have anyone but me to warn them ahead of time. They know it now.   Of course,  I did take that into consideration for the first test,” he said.

Along with teaching, he has many interests and hobbies.

“I do yoga everyday and I’m a vegan. I also like swimming and have been doing so here, and I love foreign films and interesting cultures.”

Dr. Ryan decided to become a vegan after consulting an MD from a yoga ashram (community)  who was also interested in alternative medicine. She encouraged him to stop eating refined foods, animals or vegetable oils; and he says that not only is his weight and cholesterol better, but he feels good overall.

“I found I was eating things that had more flavor and I was noticing flavor more. I don’t miss the meat,” he said.

Dr. Ryan loved foreign cars and owned and worked in a garage in Lubbock for several years and taught automotive technology for four-and-a-half years.

He would like to see the criminal justice department grow at Eastern. “There are jobs to be had in this area – including as a corrections officer or working with homeland security.”

Q.  When did you begin working at ENMU?

February of 2009.

Q.  What are your main duties?

Visiting high schools in the southwest part of the state and helping students throughout the admissions process (and other duties as assigned).

Q.  What have you enjoyed most about your job, and what have been the biggest challenges (so far)?

I think that the travel is both.

Q.  What were you doing before you came to ENMU, and what other jobs have you held?

I was attending grad school – I have been a kindergarten teacher, a designer at a civil engineering firm, and surgery center manager, and, most recently, a neighborhood cat shelter

Q.  What are your degrees and majors?

I have a BS in political science and am working on a master's in special education.

Q.  Where were you born, raised, and what was your life like growing up?

I was born in Memphis, Tenn., and grew up in Arkansas and Mississippi (insert southern joke here). Pretty cool childhood; Dad is a preacher, so that was fun.

Q.  Your own family?

Wife and more cats than any man should ever have in his house

Q.  What are your hobbies?

Filling out surveys about my new jobs (was previously fishing, camping, canoeing).

Q.  What is your ultimate career goal?

Still working on that one.

Q.  What gives your life meaning.  Besides career goals, what else do you hope to accomplish?

Scented candles

Q.   What is your general impression of Portales, and ENMU?

I attended ENMU as an undergrad and moved here from one of the coolest places I have ever lived to get my master's because I really believe that Eastern is a great school full of opportunities you just won’t get at other schools (professors like Dr. Strickler help to make the school this way).

Q.  Other thoughts?

I hope my picture looks really sweet!

Suggested Changes to Academic Calendar – For several years, concerns have been raised about the short break between the end of summer school and the beginning of back-to-campus activities in August.  Questions have also been raised about the very long break over Christmas (almost five weeks).  Many would prefer a shorter Christmas break and a longer summer break.

To address these concerns, and to allow more time for the campus to get ready for the school year's start in August, a modified calendar, beginning Fall 2010, has been developed for your  review and comment.

The 2010 fall academic calendar would start one week later than the currently published calendar, and conclude one week later (Aug. 25-Dec 18).   The spring 2011 return shifts up one week, and the semester concludes one week earlier in May (Jan. 10-May 7).  Summer school would begin May 30, with 8-week classes ending July 23. Fall 2011 classes begin Wednesday, August 24th and conclude Dec 17th.  Spring semester 2012 begins Monday, Jan. 9, ending May 5.

A chart listing the proposed changes appears at http://inside.enmu.edu/files/planning/Proposed%20Calendar%20Change.pdf, with the current schedule.  Your questions and comments are welcome by written memo or e-mail to ENMU.President@enmu.edu.

ENMU Pledges Over $15,000 to United Way – As of Oct. 8, ENMU faculty and staff had pledged $15,020 to community projects supported by United Way.  If you have already pledged (over 18 percent of Eastern's employees have), thank you. If you have not already done so, I hope you will consider giving back to your community with a one-time pledge or payroll deduction to United Way.

You can stipulate the charity to receive your donation or simply give the money to United Way to distribute. Pledge cards are available from Patrice Caldwell (562.2315) or Elwyn Hulett (562.2266).  Call or e-mail them if you have any questions.

ENMU was the flagship donor in Roosevelt County last year, and ENMU has always been a major supporter of Portales and our region. I hope your generosity will help us reach our University goal of $20,000 and our larger goal of giving back to our community.

Thanks.

ENMU Presenting ‘Crimes of the Heart’ on October 22-24
by Robin Haislett
Communication Services

The theatre department at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales will perform the play “Crimes of the Heart” at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 22, through Saturday, Oct. 24 and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 25, on the University Theatre Center’s Mainstage.

The production, directed by Anne Beck, features the student talents of Jessica Eaker of Farmington, Jeremy Gardels of Clovis, Samantha Graham of Portales, Mackenzie Kennedy of Lubbock, Texas, Brianna Pilon of Los Alamos and Greg Sherman of Las Cruces.

According to student Jennifer Conlee, the action of the play is centered in Hazlehurst, Miss., where the three Magrath sisters have gathered to await news of their grandfather, who is living out his last hours in the local hospital. Lenny, the oldest sister, is unmarried at 30 and facing diminishing marital prospects. Meg, the middle sister, is back after a failed singing career on the West Coast; while Babe, the youngest, is out on bail after having shot her husband in the stomach.

Their troubles are highlighted by their cousin, Chick, and by the awkward young lawyer who tries to keep Babe out of jail while helpless not to fall in love with her. In the end the play is the story of how its young characters escape the past to seize the future – but the telling is so true and touching and consistently hilarious that it will linger in the mind long after the curtain has descended, according to Conlee.

Tickets are $5 for students, $6 for pre-college, $7 for seniors and general admission is $8. A ticket special is offered for the opening night performance with a buy-one-get-one-free offer. Also, free tickets are available by listening to local radio stations and entering the drawing in the Campus Union Building lobby during the week of the play, Oct. 19-23.

ENMU Fall Choral Concert Set for October 29
by Robin Haislett
ENMU Communication Services

Eastern New Mexico University’s Fall Choral Concert is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29 at the University Theatre Center’s Mainstage in Portales.  ENMU music professor Jason Paulk is directing and his wife and ENMU music instructor Kayla Paulk will accompany from the piano. Instrumentalists who will assist include ENMU music professors Tracy Carr, oboist, and Chris Beaty, saxophonist. Two student conductors, Janice Pacheco and Derek Gilmour, will make their conducting debut.

The Chamber Singers and University Singers will perform several unaccompanied pieces from the repertoire in their upcoming spring European Choir Tour, including venues in Salzburg, Vienna and Prague. The performers have been practicing since the beginning of the semester.

Chamber Singers will perform four songs by Cecil Effinger, “Ubi Caritas” by Maurice Duruflé, conducted by Pacheco and partial songs by Gerald Finzi. University Singers will perform three songs by Charles Villiers Stanford, including a double choir piece, “Coelos ascendit hodie,” and a double choir anthem by Charles Wood. The choirs will also perform “Deep River,” arranged by Anders Paulsson, “Sing a Mighty Song,” “Ye Followers of the Lamb,” and “God Be in my Head,” and “Wondrous Love,” conducted by Gilmour.

The musical pieces are chosen by Paulk according to what he feels will challenge and help the students’ vocal development. According to Paulk, “This includes many hours of preparation and searching on my part to determine what is accessible, yet challenging enough to continually move us toward a deeper level of music making.” He also explains that most academic courses’ curriculum remains the same year to year, but performance courses must constantly adapt to the changing needs of the ensemble membership. “In five years, we have not repeated a single piece of repertoire. And I could choose not to repeat a single piece in the next thirty years and still just scratch the surface of great choral music,” says Paulk.

The Fall Choral Concert will be an exciting experience for the audience, according to Paulk. “The program will begin with a double choir motet, with one ensemble on stage and the other in the audience.  It should provide for an interesting sonic experience.” says Paulk.

Paulk says, “We have a cultured audience in Portales and I think they will appreciate the many hours of preparation that went into this concert.”

The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Kathi Fraze at 575.562.2237.

John Available for Adoption
john

John is a 10 year old boy who is currently in 3rd grade where he receives special education assistance.  He is very determined to learn and tries hard in school to meet his educational goals.

John is very sensitive but he does enjoy joking around a lot.  He is somewhat shy and is generally anxious around new people.  As for friends, John very much values his friends and their friendships.  He tends to interact with other children via jokes or playing the big brother role with the children.  John very much wants to do his best and wants to be the “good boy.”  He enjoys helping out around the house and outside and tends to stay around his foster parents at all times.  He enjoys eating burgers, pizza, hot dogs, and Mexican food in general.  John would do well as an only child due to his needs for a lot of attention.  John does have a neurological disability which could require some form of care for him for the rest of his life.

Having a family for John that is very committed to him, willing to love him, support him, and give him the attention he needs, will be the winning combination as his forever family.

Fully approved and licensed families are encouraged to contact: Amanda Crouse, Adoptions Consultant/Placement Specialist 505.841.7919 or email amanda.crouse@state.nm.us.
